Experience

Jan has 25+ years experience of developing software. He has had various positions as software developer, project manager, quality manager, process manager, local site manager, consultant, and researcher. Jan currently works at ABB Corporate Research in Sweden.

Philosophy

Jan believes in the importance of empowering individuals and teams. Software development cannot be successful without disciplined, motivated people. He is interested in both the technical and human sides of software development.

“… getting the people factors right is much more important in the end than technology or method considerations.” Barry Boehm and Richard Turner, Balancing Agility and Discipline, p. 81.

“The main reason we tend to focus on the technical rather than the human side of the work is not because it’s more crucial, but because it’s easier to do.” Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister, Peopleware, p. 5.

Methodologies

Jan is a SEISM-trained PSPSM (Personal Software ProcessSM) Instructor. He has gradually introduced Agile and PSP/TSP principles with projects he has coached and managed in Sweden.

“…, Agile approaches are characterized by a culture of collaboration that emphasizes knowledge sharing, team responsibility for product delivery, and collaborative decision making.” - Jim Highsmith, Agile Software Development Ecosystems, p. 341

Research

Jan has collaborated with his Agile Teams teammate, Karen Smiley, on several papers, including “Aligning TSPSM with the ABB Business Decision (”Gate”) Model“, “TSP-EF Proposal: A Team Software ProcessSM Evaluation Framework“, and Using a ‘TSPSM Evaluation Framework’ to Measure TSPSM/PSPSM Compliance“.

Education and Affiliations
